Author's Note: One of the most asked questions, particularly for me, is where do I get my inspiration for stories, It was one afternoon while on a trip driving around in the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. My wife and I came across a little town filled with stores and gift shops. It had a great café diner where we ate lunch and then we perused the shops. In one quiet little shop , just an postage stamp in size really, we entered and began to check out the goods. Now sometime I get inspiration from many different sources.
This was one of those times. I was turning the turnstile of greeting cards that was positioned in the middle of that store, laughing to my self as I noticed each individual card. Some were cartoon in form, some a little more serious. But then there was one that stood out. It was not anything spectacular by any great standard, except on it was a simple drawing of a friend handing a friend something special and it had a few lit candles on it. I suppose you can guess what it was, but from that simple drawing the gears of imagination began to turn and crank. So I bought that card and a few others that I liked and then left.
I , for some odd reason, could not take my eyes of the drawing. That little scene of two apparent friends made my mind come to life and my imagination start to run a thousand miles an hour. So afterward I began to study three of my most favourite children’s authors. Three that I grew up reading. A.A.Milne, (The Adventures of Winnie The Pooh) ,Beatrix Potter ( The Adventures of Peter Rabbit and many other stories, no relation to Harry by the way), and Kenneth Graham who wrote the Wind in the Willows. All these authors and all these stories impacted me in a way that the characters and the story lines remain some of my very favourites to this day. I began to study each authors' method and writing process and why they wrote what they wrote. I did not touch pen to paper until almost two years later when I was completely satisfied and my story was done percolating in my imagination.
It was an awesome discovery, that from my studies of those children’s author of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s my story became Jeremiah Dragonfly’s Special Day.
It became through many rewrites and rough drafts and much editing, a story of friendship and caring, and doing things for others just because you want to and not because you have to. A lesson that still valuable today.
